Welcome to The “terrible twos”! The “terrible twos” is a term used to describe a developmental stage where toddlers begin to assert their independence, often resulting in tantrums and other challenging behaviors. It is a hard stage and also tests parents patience. My son is presently going through the “terrible twos” and let me tell you some days are hard.
Here are some tips that I use for handling the “terrible twos”:
1. Establish clear boundaries: Toddlers need boundaries and rules for routine and safety. Be consistent about enforcing them.
2. Ignore minor behavior: Sometimes ignoring small misbehavior can help curb it. Focus on positive reinforcement of good behavior instead.
3. Use distraction: Use novelty or novelty items to distract from negative behavior.
4. Praise good behavior: Positively reinforcing good behavior can go a long way in shaping behavior.
5. Offer choices: Give them choices in order to allow them to feel more in control of their world.
6. Stay calm: Respond to the challenging behavior with a calm, positive energy and tone. Avoid yelling or punitive behavior.
7. Model good behavior: Model good behavior and proper etiquette ourselves so that they have a good example to follow.
It’s important to remember that this is a stage of development, and it will eventually pass. By using positive reinforcement and consistency with rules, your toddler will eventually learn how to manage their emotions and behavior appropriately.
